ASCC’s original floating golf green (one of only two in the world) had corroded and was in need of replacement. At the same time ASCC wanted to enlarge the green and make it less susceptible to corrosion.
SMC Consulting Engineers was engaged to find a solution and to do this with all speed so that the replacement green would be ready for the upcoming prestigious Royal Trophy tournament.
The solution adopted made use of marina-type concrete pontoons laced together with timbers, all of which were supplied by a firm specialising in this work. In order to maintain a uniform deck load the sculptured green, bunkers and surrounding area were formed with expanded polystyrene then topped with a constant thickness of soil.
The finished green was of surface area 1,000sqm and weighed a total of 800t. It was held in place with rope and wire moorings to concrete lump anchors on the lake bottom.
SMC project managed construction of the green which was completed in time for the tournament.
