On 14 January 1991 the ship mv Great Promise entered the Port of Klong Toey, Bangkok. Whilst navigating the river channel the ship collided with the Port of Thailand Authority’s East Quay Wharf and with gantry container crane No 1.
The impact caused severe damage to 22 metres of the wharf cope face and fenders, broke nine wharf deck support piles, severed wharf services and caused the total collapse of gantry container crane No 1. In its collapse, crane No 1 in turn damaged gantry container crane No 2, destroyed several containers and damaged box trailers.
